Week 6 Order of Operations
We are already at Week 6 and we have accomplished many things in class. Students worked hard on learning procedures for class as well as PROPERTIES! This year for properties we are making sure to continue coming back to them throughout the year because we actually use them a lot more than we think we do when completing mathematical problems. But this week we are going to finish up our time with integers. Multiplying and dividing integers are quite fun because the rules are quite easy. We are also going to be learning about order of operations. This is something that students learned about in 6th grade but we, of course, have to make sure that we fully understand it because we will be solving 1-step and 2-step operations in the next few weeks. We will also be watching one of my favorite videos this week https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAgfnK528RA . This video is a great teaching tool. The host in the video explains how to use order of operations quite effectively and in a clear understandable manner.

Week 2 Properities
This week we are going to be working on properties. These are the rules/ foundation for equations. They help MATHEMATICIANS to know that when you add, subtract, multiply or divide on both sides you have to conduct that step based on a property. Unfortunately, this is a memory item that students have to learn and not just popping something into the calculator which is much easier. But most students know that 4+3 and 3+4 are the same thing, they just might not know that it is the commutative property which makes that ALWAYS true. Properties for 7th grade math only deal with adding and multiplying.
Use the following link and review your student's notebook for additional information on the properties: https://www.cliffsnotes.com/study-guides/algebra/algebra-i/preliminaries-and-basic-operations/properties-of-basic-mathematical-operations
Additionally, on the resources page there are a few videos which we will use in class. While reviewing this information at home it may be necessary to watch the videos again because they do provide a great deal of information.

Week 1: Welcome to Math 7 and fostering our Love of Math!!
I am excited to be back teaching 7th grade math here at Albert Hill for the 3rd year. This year we are focusing on getting a better understanding of math so that we may be able to manipulate it however necessary. Many students do not understand that seventh grade math is the basis for much of the everyday calculations that we use, so it is a necessary skill that they should learn. It is my goal this to help students understand how they will implement what they learn in class in their lives and to make it a bit more fun. We will "Leaf" Our Math Frustrations at the door of 214 and inside foster our love of math. This year we will be using various modes to learn the Virginia Standards of Learning for seventh grade math.
